Daily Market Summary
1. Market Overview
On Tuesday, October 20, money diverged beneath the surface of U.S. equity indexes. The Dow rose to 52,495.88 (+1.02%, +529.85), the Russell 2000 to 2,773.43 (+1.65%, +45.13) and the S&P 500 to 7,712.57 (+0.28%, +21.84), while the Nasdaq finished flat at 26,424.82 (-0.02%, -6.07). Healthcare's XLV jumped +2.38% as the sector index hit a record high, followed by real estate (+1.70%), utilities (+1.26%) and financials (+1.20%). Only technology's XLK (-0.27%) and semiconductors' SMH (-0.38%) declined. It was a rotation out of AI tech into healthcare, value and small caps. Unconfirmed reports of a Qatar-Pakistan proposal to revive Iran talks pushed Brent down to $109.01 (-0.49%), the U.S. 10-year yield eased to 5.117% (-1.9bp) and the VIX fell for a third straight session to 17.39 (-5.69%). Korea moved the other way and slumped. The KOSPI tumbled to 5,552.74 (-3.73%, -215.27), erasing two days of gains in a single session and closing below even the 10/15 Black Thursday close (5,554.22). Foreign investors and institutions together sold more than 1.5 trillion won, and on the same day AI data center company Elice fell -32% on its first day on the KOSDAQ, the worst debut in Korean IPO history. Together with CoreWeave's 15.5% bond yield, doubts about "the cost of capital for AI infrastructure" are spreading across equity, credit and IPO markets. After the close, Netflix fell 3-4% in after-hours trading on a lowered ad revenue outlook. Korea's regular session has not opened yet today, and U.S. prices are as of the 10/20 close.
Key Takeaways
Macro: The U.S. 10-year yield at 5.117% has come down from a 24-year high (5.36%) earlier this month but remains in the 5.1% range. Markets are pricing a hold at the 10/27-28 FOMC and about an 89% probability of a December hike. Hopes for Iran talks pushed Brent from an intraday $111.99 to around $109, but 18 vessels have been attacked in Hormuz over the past two weeks and transit volume is down about 70%, so supply risk remains intact. If the talks reports are not confirmed, oil and yields could rebound together.
Technical Scan: The NASDAQ top 10 gainers were all small caps, penny stocks and SPAC units, with HUIZ (RSI 85.1) and EVAX (RSI 75.4) overbought. Volume breakouts ran 8 up versus 2 down, pointing to small-cap risk appetite in the same direction as the Russell 2000's +1.65%. However, there were no large-cap tech signals and the Nasdaq's five-day cumulative change is -1.00%, so tech leadership has not yet returned.
Korea: The KOSPI closed at 5,552.74 (-3.73%) and the KOSDAQ at 781.97 (-3.33%). Foreign investors (-533.3 billion won) and institutions (-1.0048 trillion won) overwhelmed retail buying (+898.2 billion won). Of roughly 25.9 trillion won in foreign net selling since 9/28, 83% has been in semiconductors, and Samsung Electronics and SK hynix make up 62.9% of MSCI Korea, which made Korea's decline the steepest in Asia. Yet the won/dollar rate closed at 1,328.1 won, its lowest close in two years. A sharp equity drop alongside a stronger won suggests a reduction in semiconductor exposure rather than capital flight. For tomorrow's (10/22) Bank of Korea rate meeting, 93% expect a hold (3.00%).
Sectors: XLV +2.38%, XLRE +1.70%, XLU +1.26% and XLF +1.20% rose, while XLK -0.27% and SMH -0.38% fell. Meta, Alphabet and Apple were also weak. RTX and Northrop Grumman beat earnings handily and raised full-year guidance, yet the 3x defense ETF DFEN fell -2.34%, moving against the results. GM dropped about 7% on disappointing guidance despite a $20 billion buyback. This is a market where strong earnings are not immediately rewarded in share prices.
Crypto: BTC is at $82,508.31 (+0.80%) and ETH at $2,434.35 (+1.23%) (10/20 UTC daily candle, not yet final). By news accounts, it slid to $81,405 in the morning before recovering to the $82,400 range, down about 1.6% over 24 hours. Strategy's purchase of an additional 267 BTC and the largest BTC ETF inflows in a month are supportive. BINANCE 4h volume breakouts were limited to two small altcoins (CVX, IOST), both with RSI above 70, so there is no directional signal for major coins.

Central Bank Watch
The Fed hiked 25bp on September 16, and the September minutes showed most officials expecting another hike this year. With September CPI at 3.7%, PPI at 6.3% and Brent near $110, markets are pricing a hold in October followed by a December hike (about 89%). High rates hurt borrowing-dependent AI infrastructure operators the most.
Riots and budget uncertainty in France have pushed the French 10-year yield up to 4.90%, setting tightening against fiscal instability. The euro's lack of movement signals that markets view this as a France-specific risk.
After back-to-back hikes in July and August, a hold is likely at the October 22 meeting (93% of bond market participants). Risk aversion from the equity selloff has actually improved domestic bond sentiment. With the won at a two-year high, currency pressure has eased, and many expect further hikes in November and in the first quarter of next year to a terminal rate of 3.5%.
Japan's 10-year yield is around 2.95%, and a December hike is being discussed. The PBOC kept its LPR unchanged on 10/20 for the 17th straight month.

| Small Caps | Russell 2000 | +1.65% | Same direction as volume breakouts (8 up vs. 2 down) |
Overall Market Assessment
Equities are neutral and small caps mildly bullish. A flat Nasdaq and a weaker SMH mean tech leadership has not recovered, but the Russell 2000's +1.65% and a VIX of 17.39 show broad risk aversion has calmed. Crypto is also neutral. The 15-minute patterns show no direction, and the 4-hour breakouts are limited to two overbought small altcoins.

3. Top Headlines
Global
The Dow rose 529.85 points (+1.02%) to 52,495.88, the S&P 500 gained 0.28% to 7,712.57 and the Nasdaq slipped 0.02% to 26,424.82. The Russell 2000 led with a 1.65% gain, roughly three-quarters of S&P 500 constituents advanced and the VIX fell 5.4% to 17.44. The prior week, the Nasdaq dropped 4.5% on AI borrowing and investment concerns, its worst week since late June.
December Brent settled 0.7% lower at $108.79 after an intraday high of $111.99. Unconfirmed reports that Qatar and Pakistan had put forward a new proposal to revive negotiations to end the Iran war drove the decline. However, according to Kpler, 18 vessels were attacked in Hormuz over the past two weeks and transits fell about 70% to 254 per week.
The 10-year rose as high as 5.14% intraday before easing to around 5.12% on lower oil and weak housing data. That is below the 5.36% reached earlier this month, a 24-year high. Markets are pricing a hold at the 10/27-28 FOMC and about an 89% probability of a December hike.
CoreWeave slid as low as $57.24 intraday, its lowest since May 2025, before rebounding about 10% on reports of GPU price increases. Its 9.75% notes due 2031 trade at about 80.6 cents on the dollar, yielding around 15.5%, well above the roughly 11.3% of mid-August. Debt and lease liabilities total about $52 billion.
Third-quarter revenue of $12.87 billion (+12% YoY) was in line with expectations, and EPS of $0.87 beat the $0.82 forecast. Operating margin rose to 34.6% from 28.2% a year earlier. However, the company cut its 2026 ad revenue outlook from about $3 billion to $2.7 billion, and the stock was already down about 26% year-to-date ahead of the report.
Third-quarter revenue was about $14.58 billion (vs. $12.7 billion expected) and EPS was $0.35 (vs. about $0.15 expected), with capex lower than forecast. The Starlink segment beat expectations, but launch counts fell short and the cash balance was well below expectations. Shares were at $147.50 before the release, down about 6% on the week.
Revenue was $50 billion and adjusted EPS of $3.70 topped the LSEG estimate of $3.63. The company also authorized a $20 billion buyback, more than 25% of its market cap. However, it only narrowed its 2026 adjusted EBIT outlook to $14.5-15.5 billion, and shares fell about 7% intraday.
RTX posted adjusted EPS of $2.26, well above the $1.78 forecast, and raised its full-year adjusted EPS outlook to $7.65-7.75 and its revenue outlook to $97-97.5 billion. Its backlog is a record $340 billion. Northrop Grumman also raised its full-year adjusted EPS outlook to $29.35-29.75, with a record backlog of $109.6 billion.
Bitcoin slid to $81,405 in the morning before partially recovering to the $82,400 range in the afternoon. It was down about 1.6% over 24 hours and about 2.9% on the week. ETF outflows, resistance at $82,000 and risk aversion from continued Middle East attacks were cited as reasons for the weakness.
Korea
The KOSPI fell 215.27 points (-3.73%) to close at 5,552.74 after sliding as low as 5,493.24 (-4.76%) intraday. Foreign investors (-533.3 billion won) and institutions (-1.0048 trillion won) overwhelmed retail buying (+898.2 billion won), and the KOSDAQ also fell 3.33% (781.97). Brokerages cited unresolved concerns over AI investment funding, instability in France, WTI in the $103 range and a 5.14% U.S. 10-year yield, and said the 62.9% weight of two chip stocks in MSCI Korea amplified the decline.
The won/dollar rate closed at 1,328.1 won, the lowest since October 2024, with an intraday low of 1,325.4 won. Dollar selling by chip exporters outweighed dollar demand from foreign equity sales. The dollar index stands at 101.78.
Since September 28, Samsung Electronics has fallen 19.26% and SK hynix 27.77%, steeper than Micron (-14.14%). Share buybacks that had absorbed foreign selling have slowed, and won strength is also a burden. KB Securities forecasts Samsung Electronics' operating profit next year at 555 trillion won, and Hana Securities sees SK hynix at 405 trillion won.
Elice, this year's largest KOSDAQ IPO (201 billion won), closed at 61,500 won, 32% below its offer price of 90,500 won. The result was the opposite of its strong book-building (388-to-1 institutional demand, 408-to-1 retail subscription), and according to Bloomberg it was the worst first-day performance in Korean IPO history. Peer Firmus also withdrew its listing this month.
From October 1-19, LG Energy Solution rose 21.0% and Samsung SDI 15.0%. Meritz Securities raised its LG Energy Solution target to 510,000 won citing ESS growth and cylindrical batteries for Tesla, and Shinhan Investment raised its Samsung SDI target to 740,000 won. On the 20th, however, profit-taking hit LG Energy Solution (-4.17%) and EcoPro BM (-9.15%).
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering signed a 1.9196 trillion won contract with HMM for eight 13,000-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build two and HD Hyundai Samho six, with deliveries through 2029. Cumulative orders for January-September reached $1.842 billion, up 182.5% from a year earlier.
In a Korea Financial Investment Association survey (100 people at 53 institutions), 93% expected a hold on the 22nd and 7% a hike. The view is that the BOK will assess the impact of back-to-back hikes in July and August. Risk aversion from the equity correction increased responses expecting lower yields, improving bond sentiment.
4. Reddit Sentiment
Overall Mood
- Key keywords: SpaceX earnings, data center overcapacity, Elice IPO, neocloud credit, Anthropic IPO, peace talks rumors, cash-equivalent assets
- Dominant narrative: The view that "data centers are now toxic" has spread. Users acknowledge SpaceX's growth but are skeptical of its $2 trillion market cap. Cynicism dominates reactions to the oil pullback and peace talks reports. On r/investing, frequent questions about cash-equivalent assets such as SGOV and BOXX reflect a clearly defensive stance.

Key Community Insights
A reaction to Elice's -32% debut and the broad weakness in data center stocks. CoreWeave's bond yield was 15.5% the same day, and articles on local lawsuits and political backlash against data centers ranked high on r/technology. The community doubts the business model of infrastructure operators more than AI demand itself. Conversely, the $45 billion Nscale-Anthropic talks were cited as evidence that demand remains alive.
Goldman upgraded CRWV to buy, citing an unlevered IRR of about 15% even assuming zero GPU residual value and a blended cost of debt of about 9%. The community mainstream scoffed. In fact, CRWV rebounded about 10% from an intraday 17-month low, but its bonds did not recover, so the community's view is closer to the bond market's.
OKLO, once the flagship of the AI power theme, has about $3 billion in cash out of a market cap of about $5 billion. Users also flagged the risk of an additional $1 billion ATM dilution. Even news the same day that the U.S. will restart three reactors (2.25GW) for AI data centers failed to revive the theme stock's valuation. The lesson is that power demand and individual stock value are separate matters.
Users also noted that the talks report was walked back within hours. Prices are consistent with this cynicism. Brent fell only 0.49% ($109.01), and Hormuz transit remains down about 70%. News on r/worldnews of a third U.S. carrier deployment and British fighter jets stationed in Saudi Arabia points the same way.
SpaceX revenue of $14.58 billion (+161% YoY) handily beat the $12.7 billion consensus, but shares were roughly flat after hours. Speculative fervor ran high, with a $2 million full-margin buy screenshot going viral just before earnings, but the price reaction sided with valuation skeptics.

- Oil cynicism matches the small Brent decline: The community viewed the talks reports as "fake news," and Brent fell only -0.49% ($109.01). The market likewise priced in talks hopes only partially. WTI's sharp -5.37% drop includes a front-month roll effect from the November contract expiry, so it is hard to compare directly with the community's "$111 to $103" perception.
- The "chips down, staples up" observation matches prices: In line with WSB's rotation observation, SMH -0.38% and XLK -0.27% fell while XLP +0.62% and XLV +2.38% rose. Fewer mentions of MU (158→117) and NVDA (64→40) also point to waning interest in semiconductors.
- Bullish Netflix tone diverges from after-hours decline: NFLX mentions rose tenfold from 16 to 161, with mostly positive reviews in the daily thread. But the stock fell 3-4% after hours on the lowered ad revenue outlook. The community reacted to the EPS surprise while the market focused on guidance.
- SpaceX valuation doubts match the flat after-hours trade: Speculative fervor was high with the most mentions (215), but shares stayed roughly flat even though revenue beat consensus by nearly 15%. The community's "$2 trillion market cap" skepticism matched the price reaction.
- CRWV cynicism matches bond yields but diverges from the stock rebound: The community did not buy Goldman's upgrade, and the 15.5% bond yield points the same way. The stock, however, rebounded about 10% from its intraday low, splitting short-term trading from credit judgment.
- Bullish crypto tone broadly matches prices: r/Bitcoin's 83K rebound and ETF inflow news are consistent with BTC +0.80% (value from the in-progress UTC daily candle). However, news accounts show -1.6% over 24 hours and -2.9% on the week, so the bounce remains within the range ($80,000-84,000).

Chris Sununu of Airlines for America said jet fuel is up 250%, making U.S. Thanksgiving domestic fares 31% more expensive than last year, and that U.S. airlines are absorbing most of the cost while bearing about $12 billion in losses this year. Ryanair's CEO warned European airfares would rise 10-20% next year. Big Technology's Alex Kantrowitz argued SpaceX should be seen as a de facto hyperscaler that builds compute and sells it to customers such as Anthropic, and Evercore ISI said 2027 catalysts (Starship reuse, V3 satellites, orbital compute) will drive the stock more than Q3 numbers. CNBC also reported that Apple received an unusual double downgrade on weak iPhone 18 Pro shipments and rising memory costs.
The program grouped Elice's 32% first-day plunge, despite raising about $150 million at the top of its range, with Firmus's IPO withdrawal, SB Energy's valuation cut and the debate over Nscale's listing valuation as part of the same trend. It reported that the SOX fell 2.5% early in the session to its lowest since late July before turning higher in the final hour. Gartner projected $3.6 trillion in revenue against $6 trillion in AI spending for 2027-2030, warning of write-downs, while J.P. Morgan Asset Management expects AI enablers to account for about 75% of earnings growth next year. Anthropic is negotiating a compute deal of up to $45 billion with Nscale.
Market Hang singled out the Korean market, where memory makes up more than half the index, as the "canary in the coal mine" for AI sentiment. Citing the FT, it said hyperscaler CDS trading has quadrupled since July and CoreWeave CDS remains stuck near 1,100bp. The diagnosis is that the low VIX reflects high dispersion and low correlation, so it could shift abruptly if correlation rises. The 8:30 covered HSBC maintaining its sell rating on CoreWeave (price target $39), noting that CoreWeave's revenue per MW will reach only about $12 million in 2027 versus $17-18 million in annual revenue per MW for hyperscalers. As for why defense stocks are down about 3% this year even though Northrop and RTX beat and raised guidance, the program cited waiting for confirmation of budget execution and cost pressures such as rare earth magnets.
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged preparation, warning that AI's rapidly advancing math capabilities could weaken wallet signatures within months. Addresses with already-exposed public keys are most vulnerable, covering about one-third of bitcoin. No case of a break has occurred yet, and mining and hashing are less affected. Bitcoin developers are debating draft proposals to block transfers from legacy addresses after three years and to retire legacy signatures after five years.
Lee Ji-hwan, CEO of Aurora Investment Advisory, summed up the selloff as a chain of "rising oil, inflation fears, rate hikes, rising bond yields and neocloud funding pressure." Hedge fund allocations to AI stocks fell from 31.7% in June to 26.1%, but with short positions not exceeding 30%, he did not see a shift to a downtrend, saying the trend would only break if chips fell below their July lows. Yoo Young-hwa, a manager at KB Securities, attributed SK hynix's weakness to a lack of liquidity rather than the stock itself, saying the key is whether SoftBank CDS rising above 430bp spreads credit fears to OpenAI's funding sources. In the closing market wrap, center head Kim Jang-yeol said Big Tech needs to show backlog growth rather than capex increases.
After the KOSPI closed at 5,552 and the KOSDAQ at 781, SK hynix fell more than 5% and LG Energy Solution another 4.4% in the after-market. Commentator Kwon Hye-young said that without a U.S.-Iran deal this week, a further decline would come next week and that would be the time to add exposure, pointing to Doosan Enerbility (2027 nuclear orders). Commentator Park Tae-jun cited Samsung Electro-Mechanics' 360 billion won long-term BGA substrate supply contract as evidence that shortages are spreading from high-end to commodity substrates.
Han Ji-young of Kiwoom Securities estimated that foreign investors have sold about 210 trillion won since the start of the year, leaving little left to sell, and saw a W-shaped double-bottom phase like 2018, 2022 and March 2026. The worst-case low is around 5,100, equivalent to a forward P/B of 1x. In contrast, Professor Kim Young-ik said the AI bubble is in the process of bursting, with non-bank finance such as private credit at the epicenter. He said the KOSPI market cap-to-M2 ratio, currently about 94%, could fall further to its long-term average of 58%, forecast a U.S. recession in the first half of next year based on the peak in U.S. leading indicators, and recommended a 20% equity allocation. CEO Lee Kwon-hee attributed Korea's decline despite the U.S. chip rebound to internal issues such as the controversy over a Solidigm spin-off listing.
A guest who has long emphasized circular financing and CDS risk said this is not a meltdown but a phase in which doubt grows in a self-fulfilling way. The reasoning is that neoclouds account for about 6% of AI data center debt and hyperscalers more than 90%, so even if CoreWeave collapses, the whole ecosystem will not. The guest put a 1x forward P/B for the KOSPI at about 5,120, seeing more upside than downside. Another video argued that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are cheap at 3-4x forward P/E but that the discount is justified by their heavy dependence on the U.S.
Consensus vs. Divergent Views
Consensus
- AI infrastructure credit is the market's central variable. Multiple channels highlighted CoreWeave CDS at 1,100-1,200bp, a 15% bond yield, SoftBank CDS at 430bp and Oracle's BBB- credit rating. Most added the caveat that "it is not systemic risk unless it spreads to hyperscalers." This matches news that HYG was flat and LQD +0.33%, showing no contagion yet to high yield or investment grade.
- Elice's -32% revived neocloud skepticism. Both Bloomberg Tech and Yahoo Finance focused on the fact that "even a profitable company couldn't hold up," and viewed the IPO setbacks of Firmus, AirTrunk, SB Energy and Nscale as the same trend.
- Oil above $100 weighs on AI investment through interest rates. A 250% jump in jet fuel, Hormuz transits falling from 20 million to 8.5 million barrels a day and the possibility of two Fed hikes in a prolonged blockade were tied together as a chain of "oil, inflation, rates, AI funding."
- Foreign and institutional flows are the direct cause of Korea's slump. Korean channels broadly agreed that only Korea fell excessively compared with Japan and Taiwan. Several guests also offered the same interpretation of concentrated futures selling early in the session and short covering near the close.
- Defense stocks are weak despite strong earnings. U.S. NOC and RTX beat yet are down 3% for the year, and Korean defense stocks also plunged on 10/20, with Hanwha Aerospace -11% and Hyundai Rotem -13%.
- Next week's earnings are the watershed. Most agreed that earnings from Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, along with the FOMC, are when to judge a rebound.
Divergent Views
- Bottom or further decline: Han Ji-young and Gyoyangi-reul Butakhae see the 5,100 level at a 1x forward P/B as the worst-case low and call this a "hold-on phase." Professor Kim Young-ik recommended a 20% equity allocation citing a sharp U.S. decline and recession, while CEO Lee Kwon-hee said to leave room for the July 29 low of 5,262 and even the 5,050 level.
- Semiconductor trend: CEO Lee Ji-hwan said it is not a major downtrend until the July lows are broken, but CEO Lee Kwon-hee noted that SK hynix has already broken its July 29 low.
- Memory cycle: The Infomax panel sees concerns over slowing memory profits as overdone given HBM and long-term supply contracts. Manager Yoo Young-hwa said global investors still view memory as a cyclical industry and discount CXMT's catch-up.
- Spillover from AI credit: Evercore and Kantrowitz are optimistic citing compute shortages, while Market Hang and Sampro TV's Yeouido Insight warn of a credit crunch and the risk of an Oracle downgrade.
- YouTube vs. market data gap: The Korean channels' diagnosis that "U.S. chips rebounded more than 1% but only Korea fell" is based on the 10/19 U.S. session (SMH +1.61%). In the 10/20 U.S. session, SMH fell again by 0.38% and EWY by 1.65%. Global chip weakness is continuing alongside Korea-specific factors.
6. Investment Insights
Today's Key Themes
- Repricing the cost of capital for AI infrastructure
With CoreWeave's bond yield rising from 11.3% in mid-August to 15.5% and Elice falling 32% on its first day, markets are questioning not AI demand but the profitability of operators building out that demand with debt. The damage is concentrated in neoclouds (CRWV, NBIS), data center IPOs and the memory-heavy Korean market. Hyperscalers with solid cash flow and compute buyers (Anthropic's $45 billion talks) are relatively less affected.
- The U.S. "AI-avoidance" rotation
On 10/20, XLV +2.38% (record high), XLRE +1.70%, XLU +1.26% and the Russell 2000 +1.65% rose, while XLK -0.27% and SMH -0.38% fell. It is the second time the same pattern has appeared, following the 10/15 PPI day. Healthcare, financials and small caps benefit, while megacap platforms (Meta, Alphabet, Apple) are sidelined until earnings are confirmed.
- Korea's semiconductor concentration risk
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix make up 62.9% of MSCI Korea, so global chip underweighting amplifies index declines. Of about 25.9 trillion won in foreign net selling since 9/28, 83% was in semiconductors. Yet the won is at a two-year high (1,328.1 won) and chip exports for October 1-10 were up 170.9%. This gap between strong fundamentals and weak share prices could be resolved by SK hynix earnings (10/28) and shareholder return announcements.
- A floor under oil and rates
Brent at $109 and the 10-year at 5.117% are at the upper end of their 10-day ranges. Iran talks hopes pushed oil down for a day, but Hormuz transits remain down 70%. Energy and defense benefit, while airlines (jet fuel +250%), transports and oil importers Korea and Japan are hurt.
- A market where good earnings don't lift share prices
Even as RTX and Northrop raised guidance, DFEN fell -2.34%; GM fell 7% despite a $20 billion buyback; and Netflix fell 3-4% after hours despite an EPS beat. The market is focused on guidance and cash deployment rather than current earnings. Companies that do not raise guidance in this week's and next week's reports will struggle to be rewarded for surprises alone.
Stocks/Sectors to Watch
Meta (META)
Its capex guidance is the first test of the AI cost narrative. Many argue that a capex increase could actually be negative and that the company must show backlog and monetization evidence. Sources differ on whether earnings are on 10/21 or 10/22.
SK hynix
Down 28.1% so far in October with 9.612 trillion won in foreign net selling, it has broken below its July 29 low. Hana Securities forecasts operating profit of 405 trillion won next year. Catalysts are 10/28 earnings and resolution of the Solidigm listing controversy.
Healthcare (XLV)
With the sector index at a record high, it has become the first destination for money leaving AI. Eli Lilly, UnitedHealth and Merck led. If the 10/29 PCE comes in hot and yields rise, the defensive premium will be tested.
Texas Instruments (TXN)
Reports after the close on 10/21. Demand for analog and industrial chips will gauge the semiconductor cycle outside AI, offering a clue on whether the SMH rebound can last.
Korean substrates and power equipment
Samsung Electro-Mechanics was the only top market-cap stock to rise on 10/20 and signed a 360 billion won long-term BGA substrate supply contract. Korea Circuit rose as much as 22.95% intraday. Among oversold sectors, this is one where supplier pricing power has been confirmed, and SK hynix's 10/28 earnings will recheck industry conditions.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering
An order for eight HMM container ships worth 1.9196 trillion won brings cumulative January-September orders up 182.5%. Won strength (1,328 won) is a profitability variable, and Q3 GDP on 10/27 and the currency trend should be watched together.
Risk Factors
- Contagion from AI infrastructure credit: Triggers would be downgrades of neoclouds other than CoreWeave or Oracle (BBB-), or weakness in high-yield indexes. Contagion could bring a second leg down in the SOX and KOSPI chips (a retest of the 5,100-5,260 KOSPI range) along with a flight to Treasuries. Indicators to watch are HYG (currently 76.83, flat), CoreWeave's bond yield (15.5%) and SoftBank CDS (430bp).
- Disappointing Big Tech capex guidance: If Meta (this week) and Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet (next week) cut capex, chip demand expectations will falter; if they raise it, debt concerns will grow, a double-edged setup. Indicators to watch are backlog and free cash flow, and on disappointment SMH could retest its 10/16 lows.
- Renewed oil spike: If the Iran talks reports fall through and Hormuz attacks continue, Brent could break back above $110 and approach Goldman's $120. Inflation expectations and Fed hike expectations would rise together, weighing on airlines, transports, Korea and Japan. Indicators to watch are Brent, Hormuz transit volumes and U.S. crude inventories.
- A locked-in December Fed hike and a retest of 5.36% on the 10-year: Triggers are September PCE (10/29) and the October FOMC statement (10/28). If the 10-year rises into the 5.3% range, today's rebound in growth stocks, real estate and utilities would reverse. Indicators to watch are the FedWatch December probability (currently about 89%) and the 10-year.
- Continued foreign selling of Korean chips: Combined with forced liquidation risk (31 trillion won in margin loans, 96 trillion won in investor deposits), the KOSPI could slide to a 1x forward P/B (the 5,100-5,120 range). Indicators to watch are foreign net selling of chips, the won/dollar rate and SK hynix earnings (10/28).
7. Sector Analysis
Sector of the Day: Healthcare (XLV +2.38%)
The healthcare sector index hit a record high on 10/20. XLV rose to 179.83 (+2.38%), the biggest gain among the 11 sectors, led by Eli Lilly, UnitedHealth and Merck. It mirrored precisely the same day's XLK -0.27%, SMH -0.38% and weakness in Meta, Alphabet and Apple, showing that when doubts grow over AI debt and the payback on capex, money moves into defensive growth sectors with high earnings visibility. The macro backdrop was also supportive, with the 10-year down 1.9bp and the VIX down 5.69%. However, just as the defensive rotation on the 10/15 PPI day reversed within a day on 10/19, this move will be tested again by Meta's earnings and the 10/29 PCE. On the other side, semiconductors turned lower just a day after the 10/19 rebound (+1.61%), and in Korea the decline continued with SK hynix -4.23% and Samsung Electronics -2.98%.

Dominant Market Narrative
The theme running through the past 10 days is doubt over "AI investment will continue, but who pays for it and how." The starting point was CoreWeave's bonds falling to yields in the 15% range, and the same doubt spread through credit, equity and IPO markets via eight straight declines in U.S. chips, Korea's Black Thursday and Elice's -32% IPO. On top of that, CPI at 3.7%, PPI at 6.3% and Brent at $110 cemented the Fed's December hike path (about 89%), adding to the discount-rate burden. High rates hurt capital-intensive AI infrastructure operators the most. Both forces worked in the same direction.
The interaction between events was also clear. Contagion moved in sequence from CoreWeave's credit squeeze to the U.S. chip selloff, Korea's Black Thursday, and Elice's failure and the KOSPI's renewed slump. Conversely, the Treasury rally on PPI day and the 10/20 Iran talks hopes temporarily pulled down rates and oil, but both times the beneficiaries were defensive and value stocks rather than tech. The 10/19 rebound came from secondary batteries and biotech rather than AI chips and was fully reversed in Korea the next day. French instability was confined to European bond spreads, and the euro actually strengthened, so it is hard to see it as the main driver of Asian selling.
Risk Scenarios
1. Contagion from AI infrastructure credit Probability Low to Medium
This is the case where CoreWeave-level bond weakness spreads to other neoclouds, data center lease bonds and high-yield indexes. With HYG flat and LQD +0.33%, there are currently no signs of contagion. If it spreads, a second leg down in chips and Korean equities could come alongside a flight to Treasuries.
2. Big Tech earnings signal capex cuts Probability Medium
If Meta, Amazon and others cut capex or hint at delayed monetization, chip demand expectations will falter directly. Holding capex steady, conversely, could heighten debt concerns. The impact would be concentrated in the SOX and KOSPI chips.
3. Renewed oil spike Probability Medium
If the Iran talks reports fall through and Hormuz attacks or Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia continue, Brent could break back above $110 and approach $120. U.S. crude inventories have fallen by more than 51 million barrels over 26 weeks and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is near its operational floor, leaving little policy buffer.
4. December Fed hike and a retest of 5.36% on the 10-year Probability Medium to High
A hot September PCE (10/29) would lock in a December hike and could even unsettle expectations for an October hold. This weighs on growth stocks, real estate and utilities.
5. Continued foreign selling of Korean chips Probability Medium
With two chip stocks making up 62.9% of MSCI Korea, global chip underweighting amplifies index declines. Concrete shareholder return plans at the end of October and SK hynix earnings (10/28) are cited as potential turning points.
6. Failed French budget vote Probability Low to Medium
Further protests on Saturday and the 2027 budget vote are the hurdles. If spreads widen further, the strain could spread to European bank stocks and the euro.
7. Expiry of U.S.-China tariff truce (11/10) and U.S. midterm elections (11/3) Probability Not Assessed
If the truce is not extended, rare earth export controls would shake battery and semiconductor supply chains. No reports of progress in negotiations during October have been confirmed.
