Oracle jumped more than 8% intraday on earnings day but ended up closing down 2%, yet today the semiconductor ETF is up more than 4%. Can I still trust the semiconductor rally and ride it?

Oracle's two faces: the relationship between the reversal close and the semiconductor rally
Oracle spiked as high as +7.8% intraday on its September 10 earnings day, only to close -2% (ranked #4 by Impact Score in the 10-day retrospective). On the surface, the headline number was strong — a "$664 billion AI cloud backlog" — so why did the stock slip?
The key lies in the composition of that backlog. Of the $664 billion, roughly $300 billion, nearly half, comes from a single customer, OpenAI (Yahoo Finance, IntuitionLabs, 2026-09). Rather than the sheer revenue figure, the market reflected concentration risk — "if one customer wobbles, the whole company's results wobble" — and unwound the initial rally. Seeking Alpha even treated the scenario of "OpenAI walking away from the contract" as an explicit risk (Seeking Alpha, 2026-09).
Yet the same market pushing SMH up +4.02% today (09-21) isn't a contradiction. Oracle management's disclosure that "backlog excluding OpenAI has doubled in a year" has sunk into the market (24/7 Wall St, 2026-09-11), reinforcing confirmation that AI infrastructure demand is spreading beyond the single Oracle-OpenAI pairing to the Intel-AUO micro-LED partnership and the five hyperscalers' combined 2026 capex of $660-690 billion (Futurum, 2026). In other words, "Oracle's individual customer concentration risk" and "demand expansion across the whole semiconductor sector" are stories at different levels.
What the signal data says
Per the signal dashboard, SMH closed at $573.00 on 09-18 (latest data), still in a -14.71% drawdown from its yearly high of $671.83. trail_buf improved from 0.60 ("danger") on 09-14 to 5.29 ("caution") on 09-18, and entry_ok, which was False for three straight days from 09-15 through 09-17, flipped back to True on 09-18. Today's +4.02% rally can be read as an extension of that improving trend, but it remains a bounce from a level still down roughly 15% from its high.
| Date | Close | trail_buf | Status | entry_ok |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 09-14 | 541.50 | 0.60 | Danger | True |
| 09-15 | 542.11 | 0.69 | Danger | False |
| 09-16 | 545.56 | 1.21 | Danger | False |
| 09-17 | 560.61 | 3.45 | Danger | False |
| 09-18 | 573.00 | 5.29 | Caution | True |
What investors should watch
- Oracle as an individual stock could see elevated volatility until non-OpenAI backlog growth is confirmed as actual revenue.
- Sector ETFs like SMH track the broader hyperscaler capex trend more than any single stock's customer concentration risk. Next week's Micron earnings will be the checkpoint that verifies whether that broader demand expansion is real.
- If you're riding the semiconductor rally now, remember that a sector ETF diversifies single-customer risk better than a single stock like ORCL.
