Daily Market Summary
Daily Market Summary
1. Market Overview
U.S. stocks fell for a second straight day on October 8 (U.S. Eastern time). The S&P 500 closed at 7,765.36 (-0.47%, -36.41) and the Nasdaq fell harder, to 27,193.34 (-1.25%, -345.35). The Dow was flat at 51,231.64 (+0.10%). A report that OpenAI's annualized revenue at the end of September was about $50 billion, below the $68 billion the market had assumed, triggered a selloff in AI stocks. The semiconductor ETF (SMH) fell -2.84%, Oracle -5.48% and CoreWeave more than 7%. The selling concentrated in large-cap tech, and money rotated into energy (XLE +2.97%) and consumer staples (XLP +2.11%).
Interest rates and oil are setting the floor conditions. The minutes of the September FOMC meeting said a majority saw another hike this year as appropriate. The 10-year yield hit 5.35% intraday on October 7, the highest since 2002, then fell to 5.231% (-4.6bp) on October 8 after a strong 30-year auction. Brent rose to $103.73 (+3.52%) on Iranian tanker attacks and a hurricane. In Korea, the KOSPI closed at 6,625.93 (-2.62%), its third straight decline. Samsung Electronics posted a record preliminary third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, yet foreign investors net sold about 1.56 trillion won. Korean markets are closed on October 9.
Key Takeaways
Macro: Long-term yields at their highest since 2002 (10-year at 5.23-5.35%), the Fed's bias toward another hike and Brent above $100 have converged. September CPI on October 14 is the next inflection point.
Technical scan: The Nasdaq's top 10 gainers are all sub-$2 stocks and SPAC units, so the directional signal is weak. In crypto, 4-hour volume breakouts run 18 up versus 3 down, but BTC (-1.81%) and ETH (-3.79%) are weak.
Korea: KOSPI 6,625.93 (-2.62%), foreign investors net sold about 1.56 trillion won. Samsung Electronics' 107.4 trillion won profit was not reflected in its share price, and flows rotated into materials, parts and equipment names and into rechargeable batteries.
Sectors: Semiconductors (SMH -2.84%) and technology (XLK -1.79%) were weak, while energy and consumer staples were strong. After hours, the three major U.S. carriers fell 7-8% on SpaceX's acquisition of 800MHz spectrum.
Crypto: BTC at $81,766.98 (-1.81%) is near a three-week low. Reports say Bitcoin ETFs saw about $485 million of net outflows in a single day.

Central Bank Developments
The policy rate is 3.75-4.00%. The median dot in the September projections is 4.1% for year-end, pointing to one more hike this year. St. Louis Fed President Musalem said further hikes are needed over the next 6-9 months, and Governor Waller said more hikes are needed but timing and size are flexible. Markets lean toward an October hold and a December hike. Even with weak hiring, 3.4% inflation sustains the case for a hike.
The policy rate is 3.00% a year. It raised rates by 0.25pp each in July and August, taking it from 2.50% to 3.00%. Brokerages expect a hold in October, one hike in November (to a final 3.25%), and see 3.50% as possible if oil stays high. The won is at 1,338.5 per dollar (Oct 8 close), below the mid-September forecast range of 1,367-1,379 despite expectations of Fed hikes.

Overall Market Assessment
Equities bearish Crypto neutral
Equities are bearish. The list of gainers carries little directional information, but at the index level the Nasdaq's -1.25%, SMH's -2.84% and XLK's -1.79% show clear weakness in growth stocks, and flows crowded into energy and consumer staples. VIX at 15.41 is low, so this looks more like selective selling than fear. Crypto is neutral. Small-cap altcoins show short-term buying, but BTC and ETH are weak, so large coins and small altcoins diverge. It also has to be factored in that the gainers list does not explain the weakness in large caps.

Net revenue was $25.27 billion (+5.6%) and adjusted EPS of $2.34 topped the $2.29 estimate. But weakness in North America led it to lower its full-year core EPS growth guidance to 2.5-3%. The CEO said additional cost cuts will be implemented within months.
Some G20 countries refused to form a cooperation framework. The U.S. is conducting Section 301 investigations into 16 economies including China, and there are reports it is considering a 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods.
Korea
The KOSPI fell for a third straight session and closed below 6,600 for the first time in 14 sessions. Foreign investors net sold about 1.56 trillion won and institutions about 1.16 trillion won, while individuals net bought about 2.68 trillion won. Monthly options expiry flows added to the pressure. The KOSDAQ closed at 892.27 (-0.69%).
Since the peak (9,114.55 on June 22), the Nasdaq is up 5.24%, the S&P 500 up 4.40% and Taiwan's TAIEX up 3.29%, but the KOSPI fell to the 5,000s in late July and has moved sideways in the 7,000s. Year to date, the KOSPI is up 56.84% and Taiwan up 70.36%. Foreign investors have net sold a cumulative 96.6 trillion won since June.
Consolidated revenue was 195 trillion won, operating profit rose about 8.8x year over year and the operating margin was about 55%. Memory (including HBM) led the results. The figure slightly beat the LSEG consensus (106.1 trillion won), but the shares closed at 262,000 won (-2.42%) and SK Hynix at about 1,681,000 won (-2.44%).
Exports rose 83.5% year over year and the trade surplus was $49.85 billion. Semiconductor exports were $60.3 billion (+262.8%), 49.9% of the total. Cumulative January-September exports of $814.5 billion exceeded last year's full-year total ($709.3 billion).
Revenue was 9.6434 trillion won and operating profit rose more than fivefold from the second quarter. It includes 416.9 billion won in U.S. IRA production tax credits, and excluding them it was about 339.1 billion won. Operation of five North American ESS sites and full-capacity running of the Hyundai joint venture contributed. The shares closed at 375,000 won (-2.85%).
Third-quarter consolidated operating profit of 781.8 billion won (+13.5%) fell well short of the 1.0301 trillion won consensus, and the shares plunged about 10% the previous day to 208,000 won. DB Securities raised its target price to 265,000 won and expects AI data-center chiller orders to exceed 3 trillion won this year.

Key Community Insights
This is the defense that it is a difference in methodology (whether revenue routed through partners is included). The other side argues "Trillion dollar infrastructure investment for something generating just $50B in revenue and already below estimates sounds like a bubble popping event" (r/wallstreetbets). Actual prices, with the Nasdaq at -1.25% and SMH at -2.84%, reacted more in line with the skeptics.
Retail dip-buying sentiment lingers after the selloff. This contrasts with MU, whose mention count dropped sharply in a day (from 392 to 219). It means retail buying did not fully absorb the decline.
The 10-year at 5.288%, the 2-year at 4.798% and Brent at about $104 were mentioned together. Because the timing of a hike depends on data, the uncertainty premium is likely to persist until the October 14 CPI.
The timing, with the announcement the day before the 120-day lockup expires, drew suspicion. There is also a short-term scenario of "a spike tomorrow morning and then a chance to sell." After-hours reaction of SpaceX +3% and the three carriers -7 to -8% shows the actual market read it as a business threat.
Most Mentioned Stocks (Top 10)
| Symbol | Mentions | Sentiment | Key points |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPY | 232 (284 the previous day) | Bearish | Index decline, 10-year at 5.288%, Fed hike worries |
| MU | 219 (392) | Mixed | Mentions plunged. Samsung Electronics' record earnings are positive, but memory stocks are correcting from June highs |
| QQQ | 108 (79) | Bearish | Up from 7th to 3rd. Put gain posts on WSB |
| NVDA | 98 (132) | Bearish | Fell on the OpenAI revenue report. Debate over the drop right after Tuesday's record high |

| ASTS | 77 (12) | Bullish | Surged from 65th to 6th. Presumably triggered by SpaceX's spectrum acquisition and the D2D competitive landscape |

| DTE | 57 (47) | Neutral | No clear point of debate |

OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue is about $50 billion, lower than the roughly $68 billion reported earlier. Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave fell.
The daily thread. Jokes and self-deprecation dominate, and loss-porn posts such as "SPY: -.45% My IRA: -5.4% My trading account: -30%" stand out.
The author admits that the four-year cycle hypothesis, which predicted BTC would be below $40,000 by now, was wrong, and proposes a possible low date (around October 8, about $37,400).
The prevailing suspicion is that an announcement the day before the lockup expires looks like promotion ahead of selling pressure.
A summary that the minutes confirmed more hikes but did not give timing. It led to discussion of the burden on long-dated bonds (TLT).
Reddit × Market Data Cross-Analysis
- Direction matches, but intensity does not. r/StockMarket put the day's index decline at about -0.4 to -0.5%, but the Nasdaq actually fell 1.25% and SMH 2.84%. Taking market data as the benchmark for price facts, the decline the community felt stayed at the index average, while the real shock was concentrated in AI semiconductors. A mismatch.
- ETF crowding and exit from individual stocks. The top three mentions are SPY, MU and QQQ, but MU mentions fell about 44% from the previous day. Together with SMH's -2.84%, retail attention appears to have shifted from individual AI semiconductors to index ETFs. QQQ put gain posts are in the same vein.
- Rates match the market. The 10-year at 5.231% (intraday high 5.35%) and Fed hike worries line up with the community's bearish sentiment. However, equities reacted weakly even as yields fell on the strong 30-year auction.
- ASTS surge and telecom plunge. ASTS's jump in mentions from 65th to 6th ties to the carriers' after-hours -7 to -8%. The community priced in the post-close event quickly.
- Crypto sentiment vs. price. BTC at $81,766.98 (-1.81%) and ETH at $2,475.93 (-3.79%) are weak, and the community's "doomer" sentiment is growing too. They match. The drop in mentions (BTC from 99 to 74) means attention is leaving.

The summary focuses on videos whose transcripts were verified. The three Korean-language channels are English machine translations, so reliability of proper nouns and figures is low.
Key Views by Channel (Transcript-Based)
The Fast Money panel thinks that even if earnings season is good, rate-sensitive sectors won't be rescued, and that even if a year-end S&P rally is possible, a broad advance will be hard. Since June 1, 89% of S&P 500 stocks have fallen 10%, and the top five stocks make up about 28% of the index. The VIX is about 15.5, down 30%, but the MOVE is up 30%.
The closing broadcast said tech stocks were weak on the OpenAI revenue report. Kalshi puts the probability of gasoline exceeding $4 a gallon on November 3 at more than 80%.
The host thought the timing of a hike lies in December rather than October. USTR's Greer said 14 economies signed a joint statement on overproduction and that relations with China are "stable." Greer's claim that Hormuz is "essentially open" conflicts with analysis from the FT and other videos.
It says the September FOMC minutes show all members backed the first 25bp hike in three years. Tech stocks rose 5.6% last month while most other sectors fell, so market breadth is poor. Mortgage rates are approaching 7.5%.
The AI debt video cites wider SpaceX CDS, Oracle CDS at a record high, and an open primary market but weak secondary market. The issue is not demand but whether cash flows return fast enough to service the debt.
The crypto video reports that about $485 million left Bitcoin ETFs in one day, erasing October's gains. It rebuts the idea that government-linked wallet transfers to Coinbase are a sell signal.
Early in the war, Treasuries should have risen as a safe haven, but bonds fell first. It is a signal that oil is propping up inflation. Natural gas is up 160% since the war began, and Europe depends on the U.S. for more than half of its imported gas.
The stock has risen more than 400% in two years after pivoting to on-site power generation for AI data centers. Operating capacity is about 4,000MW and delivery for new equipment is around 2030.
Lee Ji-hwan, CEO of Aurora Investment Advisory, said Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix share prices were distorted by flow factors and may normalize next week. The factors include options expiry, a report of about 18 trillion won of semiconductor ETF rebalancing sales, and concerns about supply related to SK Hynix's ADR. By contrast, Lee Joo-yeon, CEO of M Investment, said not to rush into new buying and to look at KOSDAQ small and mid caps.
It explains that Samsung Electronics' quarterly operating profit topped 100 trillion won for the first time, yet the stock was weak and flows moved from large-cap semiconductors to materials, parts and equipment names. The number of consecutive days of foreign net selling differed within the broadcast, 9 trading days versus 7.
Common Outlook vs. Diverging Views
Common Outlook
- Rising rates are the key variable. CNBC, Yahoo Finance, the FT and the Korean channels all cited the U.S. 10-year around 5.3% and the possibility of another Fed hike as a burden. The probability of the hike timing differs by source (see below).
- Market breadth is poor. 89% of stocks have fallen 10% and the top five stocks are 28% of the index. In Korea too, large caps are weak and only materials, parts and equipment names and rechargeable batteries are strong.
- Oil and geopolitics are sources of anxiety.
- For AI, continued demand and financing strain coexist.
Diverging Views
- Odds of an October hike: The Yahoo Finance video put the odds of another October hike at about 80%, but news articles say the odds of an October hold are above 80%. They are opposite, so neither is taken as settled. What is common is that the minutes did not specify timing.
- U.S. index direction: Samprotv assumes a "Nasdaq record high," but the actual October 8 move was the Nasdaq -1.25%. The record high was set a few days ago.
- Hormuz: Greer says it is "essentially open" while the FT sees the crisis dragging on.
- When to buy Samsung Electronics: Lee Ji-hwan expects normalization next week, Lee Joo-yeon says not to add to positions, and an MTN guest said to look at buying on a pullback of 5% or more. The only point of agreement is that earnings are not the problem.
- Large caps vs. small and mid caps: Lee Joo-yeon recommends cutting power-equipment exposure by more than half and moving to KOSDAQ small and mid caps, while Lee Ji-hwan recommends keeping semiconductor positions centered on materials, parts and equipment.
- Cryptocurrency: Yahoo Finance sees the ETF outflows as possible basis-trade unwinding and stresses structural positives such as the Samsung wallet and tokenized stocks. It acknowledges the price weakness itself.

Today's Key Themes
- Clash between AI investment profitability and financing costs
The report of OpenAI annualized revenue of $50 billion (about $20 billion below expectations) coincided with Oracle, Broadcom and SpaceX seeking tens of billions of dollars in debt. With the 10-year above 5.2%, new borrowing increases interest burdens. The losers are highly leveraged AI infrastructure companies such as Oracle (-5.48%) and CoreWeave (more than 7% down). Some see hyperscalers with relatively strong cash flow as beneficiaries. - Long-term yields settling at 5% and worsening market breadth
The 10-year touched 5.35%, the highest since 2002, and the Fed signaled another hike this year. Tech rose 5.6% last month, but most other sectors fell and 89% of stocks have dropped 10% or more. The losers are rate-sensitive sectors (real estate, industrials, dividend stocks). The beneficiaries are large-cap tech names whose earnings offset higher rates, but even they wobbled this week. - Link between Hormuz oil and inflation
Brent rose to $103.73 and U.S. inventories are at 707 million barrels, the lowest since 1983. Oil is propping up 3.4% inflation and strengthening the case for a Fed hike. Beneficiaries are energy (XLE +2.97%), defense (DFEN +1.98%) and gold-related (GDX +1.47%), while airlines, transport and consumer goods lose. PepsiCo's guidance cut is one example of consumer fatigue. - Flow decoupling in the Korean market
The KOSPI fell 2.62% despite Samsung Electronics' 107.4 trillion won operating profit. Foreign investors have net sold a cumulative 96.6 trillion won since June. Money moved from large-cap semiconductors to materials, parts and equipment (Jusung Engineering up more than 10%, Wonik IPS) and to rechargeable batteries. The losers are large-cap semiconductors with heavy foreign ownership, and the winners are materials, parts and equipment names and earnings-surprise names such as LG Energy Solution. - Shifting telecom industry landscape
SpaceX's 800MHz spectrum acquisition has brought direct-to-device satellite service into incumbent carriers' territory. After hours Verizon fell 7%, AT&T 8% and T-Mobile 7%. Beneficiaries are SpaceX and names in the D2D competitive landscape (ASTS mentions surged), and the losers are the three incumbent carriers. FCC approval is still pending.
Stocks/Sectors to Watch
Oracle (ORCL)
$135.69 (-5.48%), down about 30% year to date. Catalysts are the chip-dedicated entity financing and dependence on OpenAI. Dates to watch are the finalization of debt financing (targeted by year-end) and the trend in credit spreads.
Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile
Down 7-8% after hours. The catalyst is SpaceX's spectrum acquisition. Dates to watch are the regular-session close reaction and the FCC approval process.
LG Energy Solution (close 375,000 won)
Q3 operating profit of 756 billion won, or about 339.1 billion won excluding tax credits. The catalyst is the start of North American ESS operations. The date to watch is the final results at month-end.
Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix
Down in the 2.4% range despite strong results. Catalysts are expectations of flow normalization and final results at month-end (with segment disclosure). The date to watch is whether the KOSPI recovers its 60-day moving average next week.
Energy sector (XLE)
+2.97%. Catalysts are tanker attacks and the hurricane. Dates to watch are Iran policy around the November 3 midterms and the pace of IEA releases.
Financials sector (XLF)
+0.89%. Catalysts are rising rates and next week's bank earnings. The date to watch is JPMorgan's earnings on October 13.
Risk Factors
- September CPI above expectations (October 14): If it rises further from August's 3.4%, expectations for a December hike could be pulled forward to October. The scenario is a renewed break above 5.35% on the 10-year and a further 1-2% decline in the Nasdaq. Indicators to watch are the 10-year at 5.3%, the 2-year at 4.8% and CME hike probabilities.
- Spreading AI financing anxiety: Lowered revenue expectations coincided with debt financing. If Oracle-style declines spread to other AI infrastructure stocks and to credit spreads, an SMH correction of more than 3% could continue. Indicators to watch are HYG (currently -0.05%), Oracle CDS, and whether support near SMH 607 holds.
- Hormuz escalation and an oil spike: If ship attacks increase, Brent at $120 has been mentioned (citing Goldman, single source). It would feed into inflation and renewed hike pressure. Indicators to watch are whether Brent breaks $105 and the U.S. gasoline price at $4.36 on AAA.
- Continued foreign selling and a break of KOSPI support: The KOSPI broke below its 60-day moving average. Monthly foreign net selling was 6.4 trillion won for October 1-8 alone. If it fails to recover next week, an attempt to move below 6,500 is possible. Indicators to watch are foreign net trading and the won at 1,340 per dollar.
- U.S.-China trade friction: The failure of the G20 overcapacity agreement, the Section 301 investigations and consideration of a 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods. The probability is low, but if it happens it would shake semiconductors and materials. Indicators to watch are USTR announcements and China's response.
7. Sector Analysis
Sector in Focus Today: Semiconductors (SMH -2.84%)
Semiconductors are the sector where the OpenAI revenue report, AI debt-financing worries and 5%-plus rates all converged. SMH at -2.84% and XLK at -1.79% dragged the Nasdaq (-1.25%) lower, with Intel, Marvell, Micron, AMD and Nvidia all falling in succession. In Korea, too, positives such as Samsung Electronics' 107.4 trillion won and September semiconductor exports of $60.3 billion (+262.8%) were not priced in, with the KOSPI down 2.62%. This is a phase where good news has no effect and the market reacts only to bad news. As a result, the short-term direction depends on rates and the financing environment rather than demand indicators. Within semiconductors, signs of money moving into materials, parts and equipment appeared.

Dominant Market Narrative
The Fed's renewed hikes to contain inflation and rising long-term yields are the floor conditions for the market. The Fed hiked in September, and the minutes and officials' remarks point to another hike this year. In the first week of October the 10-year reached the 5.3% range, the highest since 2002. On top of that, Iran-driven oil (Brent around $100) adds to inflation pressure. Equities set record highs through October 6 on AI strength (S&P 7,818.93, Nasdaq 27,477.31 on October 5). On October 7-8 they fell for two days as worries about AI profitability and financing costs came to the fore.
The interactions among events are as follows. High rates and AI debt financing reinforce each other. Higher oil raises inflation and renewed-hike worries. Weak hiring, the strong 30-year auction and Trump's remark on holding off an Iran attack are factors that lower yields, but Fed officials maintained their hiking bias. Because the Nasdaq rose on October 5 while the 10-year spiked the same day, it is hard to conclude that rising rates immediately caused equities to fall.
Risk Scenarios
Current expectations of an October hold at 80%+ and a December hike near 70% could be pulled forward. Probability is medium, with a renewed break above 5.35% on the 10-year and pressure on growth stocks.
Lowered revenue expectations coincide with debt financing. If declines like Oracle's -5.5% spread to other AI infrastructure stocks and credit spreads, the semiconductor-led correction grows. Probability is medium.
If ship attacks increase, some see oil at $120 (single source). Probability is low to medium, and it would feed into inflation and renewed hike pressure.
Section 301 investigations and consideration of a 7.5% tariff. Probability is low.
A December hike is likely, but the timing could change if the hiring slowdown continues. Probability is medium.
