With semiconductors shaky, is it okay to switch to shipbuilding or defense? HD Korea Shipbuilding's earnings are said to be good, so why isn't the share price following?

2026-11-04

Earnings are good, but the "peak debate" is priced in

The report singled out HD Korea Shipbuilding's Q3 operating profit of KRW 1.4 trillion (+37%) as an "alternative sector." A closer look at the numbers shows another side.

  • Q3 operating profit rose 37.3% year-over-year to KRW 1.4472 trillion, but was down from KRW 1.6451 trillion in Q2. Year-over-year growth and quarter-over-quarter deceleration appeared together (SBS Biz, MTN, 2026-10-28).
  • The company booked 75% of the additional cost from the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries wage settlement in Q3 and will book the remainder in Q4. Another cost hit remains in Q4.
  • Cumulative operating profit for Q1-Q3 was KRW 4.4483 trillion, already above last year's full-year KRW 3.9045 trillion.
  • KB Securities cut its target price to KRW 380,000 citing the weak Q3, but kept its buy rating on strong new orders.

To sum up, profit is growing, but the market looks not at the "pace of profit growth" but at whether "quarterly profit can rise further." Shipbuilders book revenue 2-3 years after an order, so current profit is the result of past orders, while the share price prices in future new orders ahead of time. The company said next year's orders will also exceed typical levels, but that is the company's outlook.

The asymmetry of switching

Hanwha Aerospace's Q3 land-defense export revenue was KRW 593.6 billion, half of KRW 1.197 trillion a year earlier. The company explains this as a delivery schedule adjustment, with deliveries to Poland and others concentrated in Q4. Whether that explanation holds will be confirmed only in Q4 earnings. Buying defense now is a bet on believing that explanation in advance.

Position suggestion

  • I don't recommend switching entirely. Semiconductors fell because of interest rates, and if rates turn down they are the first to recover. Shipbuilding and defense are less sensitive to rates, so the two groups complement each other.
  • If you do it, move only part of your existing weight and approach it in stages. For shipbuilding, the checkpoints are profit trends after the Q4 labor-cost booking and order announcements; for defense, Q4 delivery results.
  • Exchange rates and foreign investor flows work in the same direction. With foreign investors having sold KRW 3.5251 trillion over three sessions, large caps broadly are under pressure, so whether flows reverse comes before sector selection.
  • Individual investors could also spread risk through ETFs to reduce the schedule risk of single stocks.
