Stocks rose, and gold, silver and gold miners all surged together. Is it normal for risk assets and safe havens to rise at the same time? Gold miners rose more than 9% in a day. Is it okay to buy now and chase?

Safe-haven demand does not explain it

Gold +3.37%, silver +5.54% and the gold miner ETF GDX +9.28% came on the same day as the Dow +3.27% and VIX -19.4%. If people had bought out of anxiety, the VIX could not have fallen this much. This move is better read through the dollar and yields, not fear.

Three things moved together

VariableNov. 4 moveDirection for gold
Dollar index101.53 (-0.34%)A weaker dollar supports gold prices
10-year yield4.894% (-5.8bp)Lowers the cost of holding non-yielding gold
OilWTI -7.79%Easing inflation worries can push real yields lower

Gold pays no interest, so the lower real yields go, the more attractive it is to hold. That gold rises when a weaker dollar and falling real yields coincide is an old rule (Investing.com, 2023 analysis and other general principles). However, we could not confirm the specific trigger for Nov. 4 in this search. The explanation above is an interpretation consistent with the direction of prices that day, not a confirmed cause.

Why gold miners rose nearly three times as much as gold

Gold miners typically move about twice as much as gold because of operating leverage, as the gold price sits on top of a cost structure (247WallSt, 2026-08). GDX +9.28% against gold +3.37% exceeds that ratio. It is possible that positioning was already lopsided before the gold rally continued for days, or that short-term dip buying piled in. This is also an inference.

Difference from the Oct. 24 question

Back then, gold fell despite war and higher oil. At the time, rising yields and the dollar were holding gold back. This time the same gold rose when yields and the dollar moved the opposite way. In other words, the gold price is following the direction of yields and the dollar more than geopolitical news.

Is it okay to chase?

  • The conditions behind this surge, lower yields and a weaker dollar, face an immediate test in the Nov. 6 jobs report and Nov. 10 CPI. If jobs or inflation come in strong, bets on a December hike would grow, yields would climb back, and today's gains could be reversed.
  • Rather than chase GDX after a 9% one-day gain, it is better to approach in stages after seeing the yield reaction to the two releases.
  • Gold miners are far more volatile than gold, so if you already hold them, check that their weight in your portfolio has not suddenly grown. Spot gold ETFs and gold miner ETFs are products with different risk levels.
