Semiconductors have fallen a lot, so can I play the rebound with a 3x leveraged ETF like SOXL? The community has both big-win and big-loss screenshots.

A leveraged ETF can lose money even when you get the direction right

On Reddit, SOXL profit-and-loss screenshots continued, and one investor said he made $16 million on AMD and SOXL and then sold everything. On the other hand, loss screenshots pile up on the same board. When semiconductors have fallen nine sessions, 'they've fallen a lot, so let's play the rebound with 3x' is a thought that comes naturally.

A 3x ETF does not deliver 3x returns

Products like SOXL reset to 3x the daily return every day. If you hold for more than a few days, the result differs from 3x the index.

Here is a hypothetical example. If the index falls 10% in a day and rises 11.1% the next day, returning to where it started, the index is at 0%. The 3x product is -30% and then +33.3%, so 0.7 x 1.333 = 0.933, that is, about -6.7%. The bigger the swings, the larger this loss. Right now the Nasdaq is in a stretch moving more than 2% a day.

A real case shows this. From December 27, 2021 to October 14, 2022, the semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell about 46% while SOXL fell about 90% (24/7 Wall St., May 26, 2026, a sponsored-style article, so figures are indicative). The reason 3 x 46% is 90% rather than 138% is the daily reset and compounding. There is also analysis that in a sideways market, a 20-30% loss can occur even though the index barely changes.

What is especially dangerous in this stretch

  • Semiconductors posted their largest monthly decline since 2008 (about 18.9%) this July, and this time too they have fallen nine straight sessions. Because it is a volatile market, the recurring losses are large.
  • The next checkpoints are the Asian open on October 19, earnings season and the October 28 FOMC. With events lined up back to back, day-to-day swings grow.
  • That capitulation-style selling appeared on Friday does not mean a bottom is confirmed. The report also concluded that extreme fear such as a VIX of 30 has not yet appeared, so confirming a bottom is premature.

What investors should do

  • If you want to bet on a rebound, buying a plain semiconductor ETF in tranches gives a simpler loss path for the same directional view than a leveraged ETF.
  • If you already hold a leveraged product, set the holding period in units of days and write your stop-loss level down as a number in advance. Averaging down can triple your loss if the decline continues.
  • Limit the leveraged weight in your total assets to an amount you could lose without affecting your living.
