While tech stocks fell, energy, utilities and consumer staples rose. Is it safe to switch to defensive stocks now, and who wins and who loses in this market?

Defensive stocks rising does not mean they got cheap
Yesterday consumer staples (XLP) rose +1.08%, utilities (XLU) +1.34% and energy (XLE) +2.52%. The three sectors rose for different reasons and carry different risks.
Who wins and who loses
| Sector | Why it rose | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Brent at $109.69 | Already risen; reverses immediately if oil turns |
| Consumer staples | Money positioning for a slowdown | Rising costs, risk of earnings-season outlook cuts |
| Utilities | Defensive demand | Bond-proxy character makes them vulnerable to rising rates |
The key point is that utilities compete with bonds when rates rise. With the 10-year above 5%, dividend appeal shrinks. In the week of October 5-9, utilities also rose about 4.4% but were still down about 4.1% year to date. That weekly gain has been assessed as mean reversion rather than momentum (Tapeboard, October 9, 2026). Some analyses also point out that utilities have risen 36% over two years and carry valuation risk, and report that Schwab rates the sector underperform (citing newsletters such as Millionaire Insiders, low reliability).
Why the defensive rotation is hard to sustain
For the defensive rotation to continue, tech must keep falling. The report's VIX is 19.99 and HYG is -0.35%, so credit stress is limited. That is, the market has not priced in a recession but has lowered its valuation of AI stocks. If tech rebounds in this situation, money flows back and defensive stocks' gains are the first to be given up.
For Korean investors, exchange rates and import prices are also variables. Import prices are up 17.6% year-over-year, and the Bank of Korea already raised rates in July and August. Energy and refining have a relative advantage, but domestic consumer goods and construction bear cost and rate burdens together.
What investors should do
- Rather than newly chasing defensive stocks that have already risen, consider them only as an alternative to reducing the AI weight you already hold.
- Energy is a structure where profits grow only above $110 oil, so limit its weight to part of the total.
- If you set a defensive allocation, cash-like assets or short-term Treasuries have smaller swings than utilities in a rising-rate period.
- Indicators to check are XLE vs. SMH relative performance, HYG, and a VIX of 25. If a VIX of 25 or higher coincides with HYG weakness, the phase changes from defensive rotation to risk aversion.
